Kanturk AFC Under 15 A Team
Kanturk opened their season with a good all round energetic performance that proved too much for Carrigaline to handle. Kanturk were sharp right from the off and moved the ball effectively on an immaculate pitch. Adam Reihill's superb positioning and keen instincts for goal were in evidence on a number of occasions with well timed runs and he was quite unlucky as he rattled a lovely effort off of the bar as Kanturk pressed for the breakthrough. Robbie McAuliffe delivered the opening goal with a beautiful dinked finish from a narrow angle, as he turned on his jet heels and sprinted onto a lovely through ball to beat the onrushing Carrigaline goalkeeper as he sprinted out to stop him.
Peter Gubbins and Finn Mccarthy were excellent in the wide areas as Kanturk and after incisive build up play between Gubbins and Matty O Callaghan in midfield, Gubbins provided the finish inside the box to double the advantage. Shaun Rahilly's trademark energetic midfield play was rewarded as half time approached with his first of the season to make it 3.
Eoghan O Sullivan, Captain Callum Dennehy and JJ Keane were ever alert at the back, snuffing out danger, and contesting every ball with a vigour. Eoghan's clever positioning as the right sided defender and astute, accurate distribution in particular, launched several productive counter attacks for Kanturk. Billy Sheill as the enforcer in midfield showed admirable striking ability early in the second half as a short corner routine led to Billy rifling home a rising strike with his right foot high to the far corner. Superb technique.
As Peter Gubbins was drifting in from the right side of midfield, he placed a curling left foot effort high, across the keeper and into the far corner to keep Kanturk on the front foot.
Keeper Billy Hayes played a clever ball out to the Kanturk midfield from a goal kick and with Eli O Sullivan providing great overlap runs out wide on the left, the resulting space created allowed Finn Quinlivan to fire home and open his season's account in style with a fine right foot strike, low into the corner. Evan Mccarthy persistence forced a corner that Carrigaline were unable to clear, mainly because Shaun Rahilly simply wouldn't allow them to clear, Shaun found a way to squeeze the ball home under the keeper to get his throughly deserved second goal of the game. Dylan Mcmahon forced a good save from the keeper again as he struck low with his left boot but the Carrigaline number 1 showed good hands to deny Dylan.
Darragh Aherne in midfield was looking to get in on the scoring act and continue his excellent goalscoring exploits from last season. Darragh was unfortunate that a rising strike on his left foot rose over the bar with about 10 minutes remaining. The last word was with Eli O Sullivan who capped another super performance from him out wide left for Kanturk with a controlled finish on his left foot, low, across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
A special mention also to our new players who admirably supported their team in an exemplary manner. Their contributions greatly appreciated and hopefully plenty more to come from the entire squad of players throughout what will be a long season also.
