Kanturk AFC U12 girls played their first competitive match this afternoon in Gurteenard. As you can imagine the excitement was palpable right from the moment they arrived in Gurteenard. Ballinhassig where the visitors today in what turned out to be a very exciting cup game. Kanturk took the lead after 15 minutes with a strike from Layla O'Brien which went in off of a post. The game was back and forth for a while with Ballinhassig scoring just before half time and they would go onto score another one just after half time. Kanturk head's never dropped and the girls gave it everything until the end. With 5 minutes to go Alysee Riordan broke through the defence only to be denied by a fine save by the keeper. But Sarah O'Rahilly Drew was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net. The match finished 2 all. The excitement levels only increased from there. Seeing how it was a cup game it went straight to penalties.
3 a piece for the first 5 penalties. Now onto sudden death, both teams missed their first sudden death penalties. Then Ballinhassig missed the next, up steps Aoibhe O'Sullivan to score the winning spot kick. What a game. A special mention has to go to Hazel Barry who saved 4 penalties today. All of the girls left everything on the pitch today and where fantastic from start to finish. Thank you to Ballinhassig for the match today and best of luck to them for the season ahead.
