Kanturk AFC U14 boys kicked their league campaign off on Saturday with an away trip to Bandon.
With no doubt their managers words of “on it from the start” still ringing in their ears, Kanturk conceded direct from a corner after 3 minutes.
With the wind with them Bandons in swinging corners were causing all sorts of havoc in the Turks goal mouth.
Ten minutes and Kanturk were finding their feet, Fionn Mernagh battled hard to win the ball, fed Patrick Healy who in turn passed to JJ Holland who stroked the ball into the bottom corner.
Belief now flooded into this team and 10 minutes before half time Denis McCarthy with a lovely shot made it 2-1
Into the second half and this time Kanturk were on it from the start. In the space of 11 minutes Kanturk took control, first Billy O’Callaghan hit a rasper from 25 yards out giving Bandons keeper no chance. Two minutes later and after some lovely dribbling from Denis, Billy was once again on hand to smash the ball home. Shortly after Denis McCarthy dribbled through the Bandon Defence before
driving the ball home to make it 5-1.
Kanturk kept up the pressure, Patrick Healy and Denis Murphy (making his debut) both hit the crossbar. With 10 minutes left Ronan Weathers curled the ball into the top corner, to make it 6-1.
Good though the forward play was, defensively Kanturk were immense both fullbacks and centre-backs were superb along with Zac Parnis in goal. But Ross O’Callaghan was a colossus. Strength and speed, defending and going forward. Whatever he had for breakfast we should all have (apparently 5 spicy chicken goujons).
Final score
Bandon 1-6 Kanturk
Our thanks to Bandon for hosting us and to all our parents for travelling round the county. Special mention to our new kit sponsors Michael and Mary Breen of J&M Breen Distributors.
