The boys played their first home game since October at a sunnny Gurteenard on Saturday morning. Everton proved tough opposition and were a well organised physical side who created the lion’s share of chances. However some incredible defending from Caolan O’Leary and Stephen Pachikara along with two well worked goals from Axel O’Donoghue and Dan Duggan saw the Turks 2-0 ahead at half time. We lost two players to injury and sickness before the break which made the game even tougher.
Everton continued to pile on the pressure in the second half and eventually the response came after a great save by Michael Doody. Only one small problem, Michael isn’t our goalkeeper so was unfortunately sent off and Everton scored from the resulting penalty! After a quick rearrange at the back the newly formed defensive four manned the trenches for an hectic 20mins. The resulting defending was nothing short of heroic but eventually Everton pullled back an equaliser and we were into a nervy last ten minutes to hang on. However this band of brothers were not finished yet and scored again through Jamie O’Connel to make it 3-2! Ten boys batting away for the victory over the final few minutes was something to behold! What a team performance with boys playing out of position and working so hard for each other. The coaches aged a decade in this match but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Well done to all the 15 players.
