With the spring sunshine a distant memory Kanturk AFC u16 took on Macroom on a wet and miserable Sunday morning, with Kanturk hoping to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season.
Kanturk started well and Callum Thompson fed Oisin Mernagh for a simple tap in with ten minutes.
If Kanturk expected the opposition to fold they were sadly mistaken, Macroom came roaring back, a headed goal and long range shot had the opposition leading 2-1.
A strike from outside the box from Milosz Florczak nestled into the bottom corner and the scorer turned provider as Milosz passed to Ryan Finn who slotted the ball home.
Just on the stroke of half time Oisin Mernagh bagged his second goal, for the Turks to lead 4-2 at the break.
The first score of the second half would prove to be important, as the ball bounced around the Macroom penalty area Paddy Hickey was on on hand to score Kanturks 5th goal and kill the game.
Callum Thompson made it 6-2 and Milosz turned in a corner from Oisin Mernagh for goal 7.
To their credit Macroom never gave up the fight and were rewarded with a goal of their own. But with the clock ticking down Oisin Mernagh walked the ball past several defenders before completing his hat trick. Although all credit to Kanturks attacking play, defensively Kain O’Leary played well in an unfamiliar role as did Evan O’Sullivan at left back. Overall a great team performance.
Our thanks to Macroom for travelling to us and to all our supporters and players for braving the elements and bringing some joy to an otherwise miserable Sunday.
Final score
Kanturk 8-3 Macroom.
