Kanturk AFC u14 were defending an unbeaten league record as they took on Fermoy on a bright and breezy Saturday morning.
Injuries and unavailability of players had decimated the small squad and 3 under 13 lads had to be called up.
Fermoy took control of the match, scoring first with a nice flowing moment and shot. Kanturk were on the back foot and struggling to find a foothold. Then failing to properly deal with a corner found themselves 2-0 down and hanging on by their fingernails. But the skill and determination that had carried them this season came to the fore, and just before half time Ryley Thompson slid a lovely ball into the path of Billy O’Callaghan who slotted it home.
Into the second half and Kanturk were hanging in, but when you have the left foot of Ross O’Callaghan you always have a punchers chance. A free kick 30 yards out was thumped into the top of Fermoys goal.
Almost immediately Fermoy re-took the lead. With less than ten minutes to go, caution was thrown to the wind, Zak Parnis went from goalkeeper to centre forward and Daithi Drew the u13 keeper went between the posts.
Kanturk were caught on the counter and conceded again. The jig was up and with it our unbeaten league record. Hopefully Kanturk can get their squad up to strength for the next game and continue their hunt for promotion. We thank the u13 boys who all put in a great shift, Daithi, Danny Grace and Timmy Kelleher.
We wish Fermoy well and hope to reverse the result in the return match.
Thanks to all players and their families for their support.
