Kanturk came away with a well earned 2–1 victory over Los Zarcos in an entertaining and closely fought local derby, with very little separating the sides throughout the game.
Kanturk made a superb start, dominating the opening fifteen minutes with confident, controlled play. Emma Finn and Danielle Twomey led the way in midfield, setting the tempo and linking play effectively, while Nida Vaivade caused constant problems for the home defence. Out wide, Saoirse Llerena and Ella Drennan provided great energy and support, working tirelessly up and down the wings.
The opening goal arrived during this strong spell when Emma Finn picked out a perfectly timed through ball to Nida Vaivade, who showed great composure to slot past the advancing goalkeeper.
That goal sparked Los Zarcos into life, and they quickly grew into the contest, applying pressure and creating chances of their own. Their efforts were rewarded before half-time when striker Molly found space and fired home a quick snapshot to level the game at 1–1 heading into the break.
The second half was a more evenly contested affair, with Kanturk forced to dig deep at times. The back four stood strong under pressure, while goalkeeper Leah O’Rahilly Drew was called into action on several occasions, producing some excellent saves to keep her side in the game.
Kanturk regained the lead midway through the half when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Nida Vaivade stepped up and struck a superb effort into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
The final ten minutes were tense and competitive, with both sides pushing hard. Ruby Galvin came close to extending Kanturk’s lead, rattling the crossbar, but it finished 2–1 as Kanturk held firm.
Overall, it was another closely fought encounter between two evenly matched sides. Credit to Los Zarcos for a great game, and no doubt the teams will look forward to meeting again next season.
