Kanturk AFC u14 travelled to Coffeys field on Saturday to take on Greenwood. Kanturk were looking to get their promotion push back on track after a couple of disappointing results. They knew their opponents would be a tough nut to crack after an early meeting at home had ended in a 2-2 draw.
Kanturk, normally slow starters took an early lead courtesy of a well taken goal by Ross O’Callaghan.
This lead was short lived as a few minutes later Greenwood equalised.
This was no game for shrinking violets as tackles flew in from both side. One of these led to a free kick some 20 yards out, up stepped Denis McCarthy who directed the ball into the top left corner to restore Kanturks lead.
No more goals before half time, into the second half with no side giving any quarter, 25 minutes of stalemate as both teams fought for supremacy. Once more a free kick was to break the deadlock.
From fully 30 yards from goal Ross O’Callaghan hit a thunderous shot that was still rising as whistled into the top of the net.
The Turks now began to play some nice football, and a lovely lay off by Ronan Weathers set Ryley Thompson through on goal and he calmly slotted it into the bottom corner.
As the clock ticked down, tempers flared in this hard fought contest and a player from each side received their marching orders.
But the match was as good as over at this stage. Final score
Greenwood 1-4 Kanturk
Our thanks to our players and supporters for their early Saturday morning start, and to Greenwood for hosting.
Special mention to Timmy Kelleher from our u13 team for playing up again for the under 14’s and putting in a great performance.
