Kanturk U13 Girls continued their excellent run of form with an impressive 4-0 away victory over Avondale in today’s league clash, played in mainly dry conditions. The result marks another important step in a remarkable turnaround for Kanturk, who have transformed their season with a string of victories in recent weeks.
Kanturk started the brighter side, moving the ball confidently and putting Avondale under pressure from the opening whistle. Their fast start paid off within minutes when Emma Finn threaded a superb pass through to Nida Vaivade, who made no mistake in smashing the ball home to give Kanturk an early lead.
The visitors doubled their advantage shortly after when Ruby Galvin played a ball forward that sent Nida Vaivade through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and she calmly slotted home her second goal of the game.
To their credit, Avondale responded well and enjoyed spells of pressure, but Kanturk’s defence stood strong throughout. Aoife Morgan, Katie Cashman, Sarah Kiely and Hannah O’Keeffe all produced exceptional clearances and defended brilliantly to keep the home side at bay.
Just before half-time, Kanturk struck again with an excellent team move. Laoise Fitzgerald made a superb run past two defenders before striking at goal. The Avondale keeper managed to punch the ball clear, but Saoirse Llerena reacted quickest to volley home from close range and send Kanturk in 3-0 ahead at the break.
The second half saw Ruby Galvin step into goal to allow Leah O’Rahilly Drew an opportunity outfield, and Kanturk continued to defend superbly. Katie Cashman and Aoife Morgan were particularly solid in the heart of the defence, clearing every incoming threat and helping maintain the clean sheet.
In the closing minutes, Ella Drennan capped off the performance in style with a fantastic strike from outside the box that flew straight into the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance and sealing a 4-0 victory.
While the scoreline may appear convincing, it did not fully reflect the contest, as Avondale played very well throughout and battled hard from start to finish. However, Kanturk’s defensive strength and clinical finishing proved decisive on the day.
Every player played their part in a fantastic team performance, with the victory moving Kanturk up to third place in their division.
