With only 11 available lads, Kanturk u14’s took to the field against Coachford in a local cup match.
If Kanturk were expecting a stroll in the park against a team 3 divisions below them they were sadly mistaken.
Kanturk got off to their slow start, and a well taken goal from the visitors saw them lead after only 3 minutes. The Kanturk boys looked as if they’d had a late Friday night at the Hi-Land.
Coachford continued to make the Turks work hard for a breakthrough, but with 5 minutes to go in the half, Denis McCarthy slid a pass to Ronan Weathers who placed his shot into the net. Then with almost the last kick of the half Billy O’Callaghan tried his luck from 20 yards out for his trademark long distance goal, 2-1 at half time.
Into the second half and once more a sluggish start from the home team saw Coachford press for an equaliser, slowly the Turks got back into the game and started to play some nice football. Denis McCarthy took the ball and fired the ball goal ward, the ball slipped through the grasp of the goalkeeper and in.
With a 3-1 lead confidence soared through the team and everyone was pressing forward to get on the scoresheet.
Ryley Thompson who had worked tirelessly up front forced his way through the Coachford defence before laying the ball off to Ronan Weathers for a simple tap in.
The Kanturk captain Patrick Healy had to go off injured, with no subs Kanturk had to see the game out with 10 players, but they contiued to press for goals, with Aaron Kiely an Fiachra Buckley playing in more advanced roles unlucky not to add to the tally.
