Kanturk U13 Girls Finish League Campaign in Style
Kanturk U13 Girls rounded off their league season with an impressive 8-0 victory over Fermoy in sunny conditions, continuing their excellent recent run of form.
The home side got off to the perfect start, taking the lead within the opening two minutes. Nida Vaivade latched onto a through ball, shrugged off her defender and calmly finished to give Kanturk an early advantage.
Fermoy responded well and enjoyed a spell of pressure, but Kanturk's defence stood firm. Katie Cashman, Aoife Morgan , Hannah O Keffe and Amy Moynihan were outstanding at the back, while Leah O Rahilly Drew was assured between the posts whenever called upon as usual.
Midway through the first half, Nida Vaivade doubled the lead, and just before the break Saoirse Llerena was on hand to finish after a ball was drilled across the square . Excellent play through the centre from Ruby Galvin and Emma Finn helped create the opportunity, and Kanturk went into half-time with a deserved 3-0 lead.
The second half continued in much the same fashion, with Kanturk hungry for more goals. A superb through ball from Katie Cashman released Nida Vaivade, who completed her hat-trick in style.
Saoirse Llerena then grabbed her second goal of the afternoon, cutting inside from the wing before finishing confidently. Danielle Twomey, who worked tirelessly throughout the match, produced a lovely pass to set up Ella Drennan, who placed the ball neatly into the corner to make it 6-0.
Ava Field, unlucky not to have scored in recent matches, got the goal her efforts deserved when she dribbled down the wing, beat two defenders and calmly slotting it home. Nida Vaivade completed a memorable afternoon with her fourth goal, striking a free-kick from near the halfway line into the top corner.
In the closing stages, Laoise Fitzgerald and Sarah Kiely produced several excellent tackles to help preserve another clean sheet for the home side.
It was a tremendous team performance from all the girls. The statistics tell their own story, with Kanturk scoring 21 goals and conceding just two in their last five matches. The team finishes the league campaign in third place, but their outstanding end of season form suggests they could have challenged for top spot had they started the campaign in similar fashion.
A sincere thank you to Fermoy for making the trip. Despite missing one or two players, they competed well throughout even though the score line might not reflect that
